Pitch Deck – a presentation for investors – how to do it?

You are the owner of a startup and have developed ready solutions that only need funding? You want to attract investors to your project but don’t know how to capture their interest in your idea? Use a pitch deck – a presentation for investors that will quickly show whether your brand and their money are ready to embark on a journey to success. Here’s how to create an investor presentation that will open their wallets and bank accounts.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF, YOUR TEAM, AND YOUR IDEA

In the presentation your future investors will see, every slide matters and works on the subconscious of decision-makers. Avoid long blocks of text. This is not the time for a detailed description of the entire venture. Highlight what is most important. Use numbers and charts that will impress potential viewers of your presentation. The greatest value of a startup is know-how, the idea, and the team. You can show who is on your team. Present your logo, mission, and vision. Why are you doing this? What is your goal? You also need to show experience – the slides alone won’t run your company. Investors need to believe that you are the right person in the right place.

PROBLEM + YOUR STARTUP = SOLUTION

An investor presentation should clearly and unambiguously answer the following questions:

  • What problem do your potential clients face (B2B or B2C)?
  • How and at what stage can your company help solve this problem?

Prepare a separate slide that shows investors how your product or service will change the lives of your audience. What are its key strengths? Avoid self-praise and ego. Only hard evidence, specifics, and data.

CASE STUDY AND TESTIMONIALS

If your concept already has results or you have satisfied clients, show it in a simple case study or testimonial. This social proof works convincingly on viewers, especially investors, who find it easier to believe that what you are saying really works.

SHOW THE BUSINESS MODEL CANVAS

Investors want to know if you can handle the challenges, run your business effectively, and understand the market you’re entering. After all, at the very beginning of your journey, they are investing significant sums in you and your idea. The BMC, or Business Model Canvas, answers these investor questions and many others.

IDEAL SLIDE MATERIALS? BMC COMPONENTS!

The BMC consists of the following elements:

  • Value propositions – how do you change your clients’ lives?
  • Customer relationships – how do you build networks and rapport with clients?
  • Channels – where are your clients, what do they read or watch?
  • Customer segments – personas, client segments (who do you help?)
  • Key partners – who do you need?
  • Key activities – what do you do to achieve success?
  • Key resources – what do you need?
  • Cost structure – what do you pay for?
  • Revenue streams – how do you make money?

Nine BMC elements = nine slides. Really important slides. Unless it’s a pitch deck that must last a maximum of four minutes. Then summarize the BMC on a single slide. Choose the essence of your entire business, and voilà!

HOW DO YOU DIFFER FROM THE COMPETITION

No matter what you produce or what’s in your product catalog, there’s a 99% chance alternatives already exist. Competition doesn’t sleep and fights for clients. What now? How do you present your product to outperform competitors?
Prepare slides containing information on the unique benefits you offer investors and future clients. A good pitch deck should highlight your UVP (Unique Value Proposition) – what makes your startup stand out from competitors? Why should investors invest in you and your solution?

MARKETING STRATEGY AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Even the best product will eventually need promotion. How will you reach future clients? How many new buyers will you attract? How many people might be interested, and what sales do you expect in the first years of operation?
It’s important to understand which marketing activities (e.g., regular social media posts) you need to undertake to build a positive image and popularity for your products or services. Without this, you won’t grow your business and may disappoint investors.

If you know how to solve this and do good marketing, better show it on one of the slides.
